NAAMLP is a non-profit, professional organization that promotes the reclamation and restoration of lands affected by abandoned mining throughout the nation. Title IV of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA) established the national Abandoned Mine Land (AML) Reclamation Program administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE). A purpose of SMCRA is to reclaim land and water resources adversely affected by past coal mining and left abandoned and inadequately restored. SMCRA levies fees on active coal production to pay the reclamation costs. The fees are deposited in the AML Trust Fund and distributed to authorized States and Tribes to implement their own programs. NAAMLP is the professional association of States and Tribes who work under the auspices of Title IV of SMCRA.
The $2,500 NAAMLP Scholarship is to assist in the education of students whose intention is to work as scientists, engineers or technicians in the field of mine land reclamation.
