Pathfinders RC&D, in partnership with the Marion County Soil and Water Conservation District, was recently awarded a $100,000 Watershed Cooperative Agreement Program grant from the Office of Surface Mining. The grant is for the Brown Abandoned Mine Land reclamation project in Marion County.
The reclamation area is 16.8 acres in size and when complete, the project will help improve water quality in a tributary to North Cedar Creek.
The grant will supplement funding the Iowa Mines and Minerals Bureau is allocated for reclamation in Iowa. To date, Pathfinders has partnered on 40 mine reclamation projects in Iowa.
